Department of General and Visceral Surgery

Welcome to the web pages of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery.
The following pages provide information on current developments. The Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the J. W. Goethe University medical center Frankfurt is headed by Prof.Wolf Otto Bechstein, MD, Ph.D.
The field of visceral surgery has a particular focus on the surgical treatment of cancer diseases, endocrine surgery, as well as minimally-invasive and transplantation surgery.
The department is the only medical department in the state of Hessen that has the status of designated transplant center for liver transplants. All modern methods of liver transplantation, including living donor liver transplantation and transplantation in infants, are performed. Above that, the department has been a designated center for pancreas transplants since 2003. In 2009, 37 liver transplants and 4 pancreas transplants were performed.

The Department of General Surgery is part of the University Center for Tumor Diseases (UCT). The UCT interlinks all university departments, sections and institutes with collaborating hospitals as well as physicians and specialists in private practice involved in oncology.
At the UCT, all tumor specialists work closely together. This ensures high-level integrated treatment in the interdisciplinary planning of diagnostics, therapy, and care of tumor patients.
