Welcome on the Homepage of the "Dr. Senckenberg Institute of Neurooncology" at the Hospital of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main (Germany). Since the 1st of april in 2008 the newly founded Institute has started its clinical work under the administration of Prof. Dr. med. Joachim P. Steinbach.
The new center at the Frankfurt University Hopsital aims to concentrate the expertise on brain tumor patients and to advance the research on innovative therapeutic strategies. Due to the effort of two foundations located in Frankfurt, the Dr. Senckenberg Foundation and the Hertie Foundation, the creation of this institute was facilitated. The Foundations were strongly supported by the University Hospital and the Medical Faculty of the Goethe University. The Outpatient Clinic and the Clinical Trial Center of the Dr. Senckenberg Institute of Neurooncology is located in the ground floor of the building No. 95 (Center for Neurology and Neurosurgery). Inpatients with brain tumors are treated on the interdisciplinary ward 95-4 (Neurooncology/Neurosurgery) in the same building. The integrated neurooncological research laboratory is located in the Neuro Science Center of the Goethe University Frankfurt in direct proximity to the Clinic.
From the beginning the Dr. Senckenberg Institute for Neurooncology was involved in the constitution and organisation of the University Cancer Center (UCT Frankfurt). This Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) serves to intensify the interdisciplinary collaboration of all specialists in the oncological field at the University Hospital Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region. Thus an integrated care of highest quality in diagnostics, therapy and support of tumor patients is ensured. The importance of our center is emphasized by the financial support of the German Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe e.V.). An international review board selected the UCT Frankfurt to a cirlce of 11 outstanding oncological centers in Germany.
One key issue of our Institute is the treatment of brain tumor patients according to international standards and guidelines. Additionally the design and realization of new innovative clinical trials and their transfer to daily practice is another main task. This ensures that patients with brain tumors always recieve the best available therapy. Beyond that, novel therapeutic strategies can be offered to our patients within clinical trials.
Our scientific research is focused on the resistance to therapy of malignant glioma. The current key aspects of the neurooncological research laboratory are tumor microenvironment, tumor cell signal transduction, tumor metabolism and tumor vasculature. More information on our research laboratory can be found via the link Research.
First brain tumor support group founded in Frankfurt!
On October 18th 2010 the first support group for brain tumor patients and their families was successful founded in Frankfurt. Since the interest was so great that this group can not accept any more participants, we are now looking for interested people to establish a second support group (self-help group).
